Two CRPF contingents comprising 245 personnel, about half of them women, were today flagged off for rendering UN-mandated police duties in the African nation of Liberia.
The squad, part of the United Nations Indian peace keeping contingent, was asked by Central Reserve Police Force chief Prakash Mishra to take special care against Ebola and maintain a healthy lifestyle while being on deputation to this country for a year from now.
"Please take care of your health, specially against the spread of Ebola. However, the instances of Ebola have gone down now; you should exercise caution," Mishra said as he sent off the two teams from a CRPF base here.
The CRPF Director General called the troopers "ambassadors" of the country in the foreign land.
He also asked the men and women combatants to maintain a high-level of conduct and keep the Indian flag flying high during their deployment in the foreign land.
The two contingents comprise a 120-member male police unit, being sent for this task since 2009, and a 125-member women squad, first being deployed in 2007.
The men and women, trained in commando tactics and special driving skills, will be deployed for a year under the banner of the United Nations Mission in Liberia (UNMIL). These teams will not only provide security cover to the Prime Minister of Liberia but also train the Liberian police in tackling the civil war scenario prevailing in the country.
While the women squad is led by Commandant Madhu Bala, the male unit is headed by Commandant P S Dharmshaktu, a dare-devil officer chosen from CRPF's special anti-Naxal unit CoBRA.
