Police in the Pakistani capital today claimed they had arrested two suspected terrorists from Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and foiled a major terrorist attack.
Acting on a tip-off, police conducted investigations and arrested the men from the jurisdiction of Sihala police station in the capital.
The suspects hailed from PoK, Dawn News channel reported. Police recovered 36 grenades, five kilograms of explosives, detonators and other weapons from them. A case was registered against the men.
Several search operations have been conducted in the capital in the recent past. The "red zone" in the heart of the city houses the presidency, parliament and the Supreme Court, and authorities have in the past claimed they had foiled attacks on parliament.
Islamabad has witnessed several major terror attacks in the past few years, including the suicide bombing of the Marriott Hotel.
Meanwhile, a protest was organised here against the killing of two members of the radical Ahl-e-Sunnat Wal Jamaat, considered a front for the outlawed Sipah-e-Sahaba that has been blamed for killing hundreds of Shias in recent years. The two men were shot dead in Islamabad yesterday.
