Polling which began at 8 AM was peaceful without any incidence of violence, deputy chief electoral officer D J Bhattacharjee said.
A total of 11,640 voters, including 6,020 women, are eligible to decide the fate of five candidates in the fray.
The Election Commission has appointed Aldous Mowlang as election observer along with micro observers to oversee the poll process.
The bypoll was necessitated following the demise of former chief minister Jarbom Gamlin on November 30 last year.
The seat, which is known as a strong Congress bastion is witnessing a multi-cornered contest between Congress, BJP and Independents.
