The attack occurred in yesterday in Lukqun Township in Shanshan County in the autonomous region's Turpan Prefecture.
Rioters killed 24 people, including two police officers, the report said.
Among the victims, 16 were from the Uygur ethnic group.
The news agency reported yesterday that 27 people were killed in the attack.
The rioters attacked the township's police stations, a local government building and a construction site, as well as set fire to police cars.
Police shot and killed 11 rioters at the scene and captured another four who were injured.
Public security authorities are investigating the incident and local social order has been stabilised, the report said.
Xinjiang is witnessing bloody riots in the past few years between Uygur Muslims who resent the increasing settlements of Hans in the province.
China has deployed large number security personnel in the province which borders Pakistan Occupied Kashmir (POK) and Afghanistan.
