As many as 26 deaf children from Meghalaya, who won medals at the recently-concluded National Games for the Deaf, are all set to represent India at the Silent Olympics in Bulgaria later this year, officials said today.
The children, who live in a rehabilitation centre for the deaf run by a Christian NGO at Umiam Khwan in Ri-Bhoi district, were trained by special coaches of the Army Madras Regiment.
It was while participating for the first time at the National games held recently at Aurangabad that the students from the Ferrando Speech and Hearing Centre outwitted deaf athletes from at least 25 states, a statement from the army said.
The army had trained the students for the various sports events for a month in December last year which facilitated them to grab the limelight at the silent Olympiad at Mumbai.
The winners of gold and silver medals will be participating in the Silent Olympics in Sofia, Bulgaria from July 26- August 4, 2013.
Congratulating the team from Meghalaya, Commander of Mountain Brigade at Umroi Military Station said, "We consider ourselves privileged to have helped these children to achieve this remarkable feat."
"We as an organization are committed to the people of our country and we will be happy to continue our support to these students. I am sanguine that, these kids will do wonders in Bulgaria Olympics and do Meghalaya and India proud," he added.
