Out of the 34 candidates who had filed nominations, five independents withdrew from the contest today, the last day for withdrawal of nomination, election authorities said today.
The by-election was necessitated to fill the vacancy caused by the disqualification of AIADMK chief J Jayalalithaa following her conviction in a corruption case.
AIADMK has fielded S Valarmathi while the DMK has N Anand, who unsuccessfully contested against Jayalalithaa in 2011.
M Subramaniam of BJP and K Annadurai of CPI(M) are among the 29 candidates in fray.
