A group of 36 Indonesian women has been detained here for allegedly carrying and circulating fake Indian currency, which they claimed to have got from their country in an exchange.
The women did shopping at two places in Birla Mandir and Amber road yesterday using fake Indian currency with face value of Rs 36,500 , DCP (East) Amandeep Singh Kapoor said.
When the showroom owners reported the matter to the police, a case was registered with Gandhi Nagar police station.
"When the women were questioned about the currency, they said that they got it from three money exchanges in Jakarta.
"They in the exchange of money got Indian currency of Rs 5.05 lakh in all," the DCP said.
Fake notes with a face value of Rs 1.84 lakh were also recovered from the possession of the tourists group.
"We are taking assistance from the RBI and SOG in the investigation," he said.
