The accident took place on a snow-covered section of Wenxi-Yuanqu highway in Huafeng township of Yuanqu county, Shanxi province.
Four people were killed at the spot while the 24 injured have been sent to local hospitals, government sources said.
The sources previously said over 80 vehicles were involved in the pile-up, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
The accident has led to a temporary closure of the section linking Yuanqu county to neighboring Henan province.
About 70 people were killed in the last few days in road accidents in China as millions of people started moving to their home towns to celebrate the Chinese New year starting from Feb 10.
