There are 3,638 sanctioned posts in the six medical colleges run by the Gujarat government, but only 2,213 posts have been filled up, while 1,427 posts are still lying vacant.
Gujarat health minister Nitin Patel stated this in a written reply to the query of Congress MLA Tejshree Patel representing the Viramgam assembly seat.
The six Gujarat state government-run medical colleges are BJ Medical College at Ahmedabad, Government Medical College at Vadodara, Government Medical College at Bhavnagar, Government Medical College at Surat, M P Shah Medical College at Jamnagar and PDPU Medical College at Rajkot.
Besides, these medical colleges which have 496 posts for class-two ranks, have 206 vacant seats in the same category, the reply stated.
These medical colleges also have around 40 per cent vacant posts in categories like administrative, paramedical and nursing departments.
While answering another query by Congress MLA from Amreli
Seat, Paresh Dhanani, the health minister said that the state government is also considering to set up five new medical colleges in Banaskantha, Kheda, Amreli, Tapi and Panchmahal districts.
