However, no name was put forward this year for the prestigious Shram Ratna Award, the Labour and Employment ministry said in a statement here.
The 40 workers selected for the various other awards are attached to departmental and public sector undertakings of the central and state governments and in private-sector units employing 500 or more staff.
"The Prime Minister's Shram Awards, 2013, are to be awarded to 40 workers... In recognition of their distinguished performances, innovative abilities and outstanding contribution in the field of productivity and exhibition of exceptional courage and presence of mind," the release added.
A total of 40 workers, including two women, have been named for the honours even though the actual number of the prizes is 33, the ministry said, explaining that some of the awards have been shared this year.
There are 23 workers from the public and 17 from the private sector in this year's list of awardees.
The Shram Bhushan award carries a cash award of Rs 1 lakh and a 'Sanad' while the Shram Vir/Shram Veerangana carries a cash prize of Rs 60,000 and a 'Sanad'.
One female worker from the public sector and another from the private sector have been selected for the Shram Devi award this year.
