49 held on riot charge during bandh in Sambalpur
Press Trust of India Sambalpur (Odisha) As many as 49 people were taken into custody by police on charge of rioting and criminal intimidation during a 12-hour bandh today demanding establishment of an IIM in Sambalpur.
The incident took place when a coal laden truck defied the bandh call and plied on the road. A group of people detained the vehicle and attacked the driver near the City Railway Station under Dhanupali Police Station area.
However, the truck driver ran to a nearby shop for shelter. The mob set afire two shops, but no one was hurt in the incident. The truck was damaged by the mob, said Dhanupali Police Station Inspector-in Charge Sumant Barik.
Based on the FIRs filed by the two shop owners and driver, a case has been registered against the arrested people, Barik said.
