5,642 regd publications added in 2013-14

A total of 5,642 new publications were registered in the country during 2013-14, putting the rate of their growth over the previous year at 5.95 per cent, the Registrar of Newspapers for India (RNI) has said.
According to RNI's 'Press in India' report, the cumulative number of registered publications in the country is 99,660 of which 5,642 new ones were registered during 2013-14. Of the fresh additions, 1,264 are in the newspapers category while 4,378 are in the periodicals category, officials said.
However, 49 publications also ceased publication during 2013-14, says the report, which was released today by Information and Broadcasting Minister Prakash Javadekar. It covers the period between April 1, 2013, and March 31, 2014.
As per the report, Uttar Pradesh, with 15, 209 registered publications, is the leading state in this category followed by Maharshtra and Delhi.
The largest number of registered publications are in Hindi, followed by those in English and Marathi.
The report also says that the total circulation claimed in 2013-14 was 45,05,86,212.
Officials said that the annual report is based on information furnished as per Section 19D of the PRB Act by publishers vide online filled annual statements.
