IIMs and other management schools in the country should help in spreading Indian thoughts and management knowledge to the world, HRD Minister Smriti Irani today said.
"From information technology to space technology, India is now in the top League of Nations across the world," she said in her address through video conferencing on the inaugural day of four-day Second Pan IIM World Management Conference, one of the largest platforms in the country to exchange management research ideas and practices, being held at IIM-Kozhikode.
The minister spoke about the country's recent achievements such as Mars Orbiter Mission and award of Nobel Peace Prize and its growing influence in the world.
Expressing regret for not being present at IIM-K, Irani said she was unable to participate in the function as she had to attend an important cabinet meeting.
"Organisations like Arvind Eye Hospital and Dabbawalas of Mumbai have blended efficiently with value in a way that is unmatched in the world. Practices such as Jugaad, langar system and frugal engineering are helping in unique ways to serve the needs of our society. Such contemporary and grassroot level practices need to be formulated and presented to the large businesses worldwide", she said.
Prof Kulbhushan Balooni, Director (in-charge), IIM-K in his address, spoke about the origination of the theme of the conference, 'Globalising Indian Thought' which was conceptualised by IIMK's former Director, Prof Debashis Chatterjee.
He said Indian management scholars were collectively ranked seventh in the world when it came to creating citable research publications, after USA, UK, China and Germany.
Guillaume Sicard, President, Nissan India, in his keynote said, "The key word in India is 'Synthesis' - synthesis of culture, ideas, generations and knowledge. While synthesis has defined India's culture, heritage and art for centuries, it is also defining business environment, practices and processes."
He focussed his address on "Give and Take" by referring to the exchange of two impressive cultures and processes for the development of both economies: India and Japan.
"What we have achieved in India in such a short time wouldn't have been possible without Japanese Kaizen and Indian Jugaad", he said.
Supported by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, the conference is being collectively organised by 13 IIMs.
The conference's aim was to bring together global scholars to one of the fastest growing economies of the world to deliberate on issues that impact global management thoughts in the years to come, a release from IIM-K said.
