The incident occurred when workers were dismantling the old office building of Jianshi county's branch of the Industrial and Commercial Bank of China yesterday, according to the county officials.
Rescuers have so far found the bodies of three men and two women who were trapped under the scaffold, state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
Three others have been injured, it said.
Six people in connection with the accident were held in police custody.
