Terror gripped a small hamlet in Junnar taluka near here when a leopard attacked and killed a five-year-old boy today morning, police said.
The incident happened at Khambodi where the leopard entered the house of a farm labourer and took away the boy to a distant hillock and mauled him to death.
The villagers, who chased the big cat, found the boy's body under a tree.
Forest officials, who were subsequently informed, laid a trap to capture the animal which was still at large, police added.
The region is reportedly inhabited by many leopards because of the surrounding dense forest and cultivation of sugarcane crop offering them a cover.
