As many as 588 illegal mobile towers are in operation in various areas under jurisdiction of the East Delhi Municipal Corporation.
The figure was given at a meeting of Standing Committee of EDMC.
As per the details provided in response to a short notice by the committee vice president Sanjay Kaushik, a total of 1,470 towers are in operation in the area out of which only 882 have been given permission.
"I had sought the same information almost a year ago and the same list of 588 illegal mobile towers was produced even then. This reply today shows that no action has been taken since then against those operating illegally," BJP's Mehak Singh said.
He was supported by Leader of the Opposition Varyam Kaur, who also demanded to know why there had been a delay in cracking down against such towers.
Currently, EDMC has sealed 27 towers and booked 351 towers. Meanwhile, Commissioner S Kumarswamy informed the Committee that EDMC had not issued any fresh permission to mobile tower operators to set up new towers since the trifurcation.
"We will take strict action against them," Kumarswamy assured the member. "Also, we will complete action against these 588 illegal towers in the next three months," he added.
