The 62nd consecutive edition of Sampoorna Ramlila, which began here Wednesday evening, will see the use of new technology "to enhance audience experience".

Organised by Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, the annual reenactment of chapters from the life of Hindu lord Rama will this year see "interesting departures from previous years' presentations".

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Shobha Deepak Singh, Director of the Ramlila and vice chairperson - Shriram Bharatiya Kala Kendra, said that the production will introduce "fresh animation and intelligent lighting" this year.

"We have also re-done the costumes, sets and intelligent lighting systems. The finesse and the quality that goes into the making of something this magnificent, sets it apart from the others.

"To date the Kendra's production improves with every show -- not therefore falling into the groove of blind faith but always remaining well above values expected from it," Singh, who has been directing the show for the last 49 years, said.

The 27-day mythological-theatrical production involves selection of "performers from different drama schools across countries, elaborate costumes, and larger than life stage set-ups".

Apart from new set-ups and technology, the team has worked to keep the mythological narrative relevant for the newer audience.

"The Kendra believes that the amalgamation of centuries old wisdom and modern treatment will certainly touch everyone's heart," the organisers said.

Singh added that although "the time when Ramayana actually unfolded may have different accouterments in terms of the external, superficial trappings, but in essence the sentiments and intricacies of human dilemmas remain evergreen".

"The Ramayana presents an amalgamation of core values that reflect the emotions of devotion, loyalty, endearing family relationships and respect to elders... life is complex with much to learn. The journey of Ram teaches us that.

"In this spirit we can continue with our journey, sure in the knowledge that behind every action there is purpose and that of the divine," the Padmashri awardee director said.

The opening event was also attended by senior BJP leader L K Advani.

Sampoorna Ramlila will come to a close on November 5.
