Seven Pakistani civilians were injured today when Iranian border guards fired rockets in the Kech area of the troubled Balochistan province.
Pakistani security officials said that at least 42 rockets landed in the Zamuran area of Kech district in a village, wounding seven civilians.
"The injured persons were taken to the district hospital in Turbat for treatment," one security source said.
The rockets were said to have been fired in retaliation by the Iranian border guards after armed men attacked a Iranian checkpost in the Koh-e-Sor area inside Iran and killed three Iranian officials last night.
Iran has claimed that the armed men who attacked and killed the Iranian officials fled back into Pakistani territory, a claim denied by Pakistani officials.
"Heavy contingents of Levies and Frontier Corps were rushed to the border area in Zamuran after which the Iranians stopped firing rockets into our side," one source confirmed.
He said the rockets continued to be fired from late last night into this morning.
Only last month the Pakistan foreign office had lodged a strong protest with Iran after Iranian border guards crossed into Pakistani territory and killed a FC personnel.
Pakistan shares a 900 kilometres long border with Iran and the two countries have an agreement to check infiltrations and terrorist movement in the border areas.
Number of terrorists belonging to the Tehreek-e-Taliban and other banned outfits and insurgents groups are said to be active in the Pakistan-Iran border areas.
In the past extremist militants groups have frequently attacked passenger buses coming from Iran into Balochistan carrying Shia Muslim Pilgrims.
