A 75-year-old man was killed and two others were injured when an overspeeding car, driven by a youth who allegedly was in an inebriated state, hit them in north-east Delhi, the police said today.
According to the police, the incident took place at about 6 AM today on the Baburpur Road in Welcome area of north-east Delhi when the youth lost control over the Swift car and first struck a cyclerickshaw before hitting a pedestrian and a tempo which was carrying eggs.
The police said that they have recovered an alcohol bottle and plastic glasses from the damaged car.
"Both the persons (driver and owner of the car) were drunk at the time of the accident and the vehicle was overspeeding," a senior police officer said, adding that the driver, Amit was arrested and booked for drunk and rash driving.
The pedestrian Bal Mukund, 75, a resident of nearby area Chajjupur, was declared dead when he was brought to the GTB Hospital, he said.
The police said that Mukund, a retired DESU employee, was waiting for a bus on the road when the incident took place.
Besides Mukund, two persons, Lal Bahadur, 44, and Tejpal, 55, were injured in the accident.
The police officer said that Bahadur was discharged from the hospital after initial check up while Tejpal has suffered injuries and he is undergoing treatment.
"Amit was driving the car and its owner Neeraj was seated in the front seat. They have not suffered any major injuries," the police said, adding that when they reached at the spot, the locals had caught hold of the occupants of the car.
The owner and driver of the car were taken to the police station and thereafter were sent for medical examination which revealed high levels of alcohol in their blood, it said.
