Eight persons were killed in road accidents on the day of Holi, the lowest in the past six years, even as police prosecuted over 10,000 revellers for traffic violations, including 1,278 for drunken driving.
"Strict traffic enforcement resulted in the lowest accidents in the city on the day of Holi yesterday," Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Anil Shukla said.
In 2012, he said, 13 people were killed in accidents on the day of Holi. The largest number of casualties on Holi was in 2006 when 22 people died in road mishaps.
"200 teams of Traffic Police officials were stationed at different locations in the city to take action against drunken driving, over-speeding, driving without helmet and seat belt and other traffic offences," he said.
A total 10,339 prosecutions were done by Traffic Police which included 1,278 for drunken driving, 973 for triple riding, 3,967 for not wearing helmet by drivers and pillion riders and 465 for not using seat belt besides others.
