The Indira Gandhi Women Institute of Technology in central Delhi was today upgraded as a state University by Delhi government.
Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit declared the Women Technical University open at a function in the university at Kashmiri Gate.
Addressing a gathering, the Chief Minister said the university will facilitate and promote research and innovation in various emerging areas of engineering, technology, applied sciences and management.
"We are confident that the university would soon acquire a unique recognition among all other women universities in the country. The Indira Gandhi Women Institute of Technology had earned special recognition due to the performance of women students. It is expected that the new university would continue the tradition of imparting quality education among girls," Dikshit said.
She said 85 per cent of the seats in the university will be reserved for girls from Delhi. Dikshit also released an admission brochure of the university while Walia launched a website.
Some of the courses to be offered by the university include information security, mobile computing, robotics and automation.
There will be 240 seats in different B Tech courses and 60 seats each in Master of Computer Application and M Tech part time courses.
Delhi Higher Education Minister A K Walia, Parliamentary Vice Chancellor Nupur Prakash and Director Higher Education S N Jha were present on the occasion.
