Police said a gang of about six bank robbers had broken into United Bank of India branch at Shimurali. After breaking open two gates, they had tried to force open the door to the bank vault but the alarm installed there went off.
This frightened the gang, who then fled without looting anything, the police, who went to the spot said.
The bank branch manager Gopal Sarkar confirmed the incident. "I found the bank had been ransacked but the dacoits failed to break the vault and loot anything."
On April 27 Rs 47 lakh had been looted from Kalyani branch of Allahabad Bank. Today's incident is the second attack on a bank in Kalyani sub division in 10 days.
