Acid attack-accused commits suicide inside lock-up

A 30-year-old man, accused of carrying out an acid attack on a 22-year-old married woman, allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself in the lock-up of a police station here, a few hours after his arrest today.
Lakhan Sexena had surrendered himself at Vijay Nagar police station this morning.
Family members of the accused alleged that Lakhan was subjected to a thrashing by the police after his surrender and, fearing more "brutality", he had hung himself from the skylight inside the lock-up using his shirt.
Meanwhile, SSP Dharmender Singh has suspended five policemen, including the SHO of Vijay Nagar police station, over the suicide incident.

Lakhan had allegedly thrown acid yesterday at the woman after she spurned his offer of a romantic relationship. The victim sustained 50 per cent burns in the attack and is admitted in hospital.
Lakhan had proposed to the victim two days back.
However, the rejection of his proposal angered the accused and he had threatened the woman with dire consequences, police said.
