National Award winning Assamese and Bengali film actor and MP George Baker today recounted his experience during Chinese aggression in 1962 as he lit the muhurat lamp of a new film "SEEMA-the story untold" based on the border conflict.
Recalling his experience in 1962, Baker said, "It was a nightmarish experience for the people on the north bank of the Brahmaputra and it was particularly bad for the people of Tezpur, a sleepy little town those days".
"As the news of the fall of Bomdila and the advance of the Chinese forces reached Tezpur there was utter chaos and confusion. The town was soon ordered to be evacuated. Crores of currency notes were burnt and sackfuls of coins dumped into the lakes," he recalled.
"Today I am immensely elated to come again to my birth place," said the BJP MP from West Bengal, who had made his foray into Assamese cinema in 1974 playing the protagonist in "Chameli memsaab" that won the National Film Award for best Feature Film in Assamese.
Baker played the role of Berkeley, a British planter who falls for a native girl, Chameli, (played by Binita Borgohain) and is later accused of murdering her.
Baker played the same role in the Bengali version of the movie.
"SEEMA-the story untold" is about the panic the people of that time experienced during the Chinese aggression.
The director of the movie, Hiren Borah, also wrote the story and script.
