Administrative sanction accorded for two medical colleges

Implementing the announcements made on the floor of the Assembly, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has accorded administrative sanction for establishing two medical colleges in the state at an estimated cost of over Rs 400 crore.
The Chief Minister approved a sum of Rs 229.46 crore for setting up a government medical college and Hospital at Karur and another Rs 200 crore for a medical college in Puthukottai district, a government release here said.
The two colleges will have a student strength of 150 each, it said, adding, Jayalalithaa had announced earlier in the Assembly that the two districts will get a medical college in lines with her government's policy of setting up such institutions in each of the 32 districts of the state.

Three medical colleges had been started since 2012-13, besides the MCI approving increasing MBBS seats in existing colleges and this had resulted in the seats going up from 1945 in 2011-12 to 2655 in the current year.
