After froth, it is now flame in a lake

In a bizarre incident, froth floating in Bellandur Amani lake is catching fire, weeks after city's Varthur Lake made it to the headlines following huge pile of froth floating on it.
This strange incident of froth catching fire was observed last night at the lake near Yemlur here for the second time in a week's time. Locals first reported such incident on the night of May 16.
Experts say hydrocarbon rich effluents discharged by establishments and household in the vicinity is responsible for the fire.
"Fire is seen since last night. In spite of media covering it, no government officials have visited the spot till now," a local resident said.

"We don't know what to do, authorities have to take some kind of necessary steps immediately, we have decided stage a protest tomorrow," another local resident said.
Meanwhile, Karnataka Upalokayukta Justice Subhash B Adi has issued notice to Karnataka State Pollution Control Board, Bengaluru Urban DC, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike, Bangalore Development Authority and Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board in this regard.

"Notice has been issued yesterday, officials have been asked to be present in person on May 21st morning with action taken report and other details," officials at the Upalokayukta office told PTI.
After the first incident of froth catching fire was reported on last Saturday, Karnataka State Pollution Control Board officials had said the fire might be because of methane build up on the surface.

The major problem is due to sewage being let into the lake untreated that contains chemicals from detergents and cleaners, they had said, adding waste from hotels and garages that contains oil being let into to the lake is also adding to the problem.
Locals also complain illegal encroachment of lake area and Raja Kaluve (Storm Water Drain) surrounding the lake is adding to the problem.
Ironically water from Bellandur Amani lake further flows towards Varthur lake that witnessed a pile of froth floating on it during April end.
