Twenty persons have been arrested for allegedly assaulting a school teacher here who had reportedly beaten up a student, police said today.
S Baskar, a physical education teacher with a private matriculation school here, was allegedly thrashed by a mob yesterday. The attack followed alleged beating of a class eight student by Baskar which was, however, denied by the school administration.
Following this a protest was held late yesterday and today by parents and teachers demanding action against those who allegedly assaulted the teacher.
"We have arrested 20 persons for allegedly assaulting the teacher," Kodambakkam Police Inspector D Gowthaman told PTI.
As regards the allegation that the boy was beaten up, police said it will be probed by school education authorities.
Government Rajiv Gandhi General Hospital Dean Dr R Vimala said the condition of the teacher, who is being treated at the hospital, is stable.
