BJP veteran Ram Naik, who recently completed his term as governor of Uttar Pradesh, is set to return to active politics by enrolling himself as a primary member of the saffron party on his home turf, Mumbai, on Tuesday, sources said.

"Naik (85) will take primary membership of the party at the BJP office in Mumbai," sources said on Monday.

The former Union petroleum and natural gas minister had represented Mumbai North constituency for three terms before he was defeated by Bollywood actor Govinda in 2004 and by Sanjay Nirupam of Congress in 2009.

Naik, who has been with the BJP since the Jana Sangh days, had also served as an MLA in the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly.

In 2014, he had announced that he would not contest Lok Sabha elections. He was later appointed as governor of Uttar Pradesh.
