Following a tip off, a joint search operation was carried out by the 16 Battalion of BSF and local police and the weapon was found buried in an open area of the house in a gunny bag.
According to the DIG (BSF) Ravi Gandhi, information regarding some weapons been hidden in Balwant Singh's house was received.
"We organised a team and initiated a search operation along with the police on Monday morning. Initially, there was no success but after scanning the area with metal detectors, we zeroed in on a place and found a gunny bag on digging," Gandhi said.
Balwant Singh was caught last year with 21 kg heroin in Punjab and has been in Ferozepur jail since May 2015.
Earlier, he was also caught with one AK-47 rifle, one magazine, one 9mm pistol and 24 8mm rounds in 2014.
