The All Koch-Rajbongshi Students' Union (AKRSU) today submitted a memorandum to Assam Governor Janaki Ballabh Patnaik demanding creation of a separate state.
"The people of Kamatapur state have been asserting their long felt demand for rejuvenation of the Kamatapur state...We demand your immediate action in forming the Kamatapur state through formulation of the reorganisation commission of the states," the AKRSU memorandum said.
When asked about the common land areas with Bodoland, for which also separate statehood is being demanded, AKRSU President Biswajit Ray said "We appeal to all to give up the Bodoland demand and instead support the Kamatapur demand. There is no history that Bodos are inhabitants here."
AKRSU does not have any objection on even Bodo Territorial Autonomous District Chairman Hagrama Mohilary becoming the first chief minister of Kamatapur, he added.
Earlier, AKRSU had called a 36-hour bandh on August 1 demanding a separate Kamtapur state. However, the organisation has resorted to widescale violence at a number of places.
AKRSU activists had damaged three buses. A number of trucks carrying essential goods were also damaged in many places. It also set ablaze a vehicle yesterday.
The current phase of agitation will be followed by a 100 -hour hunger strike by AKRSU and another Assam bandh on Independence Day.
Ray had earlier said that if the government fails to resolve the issue of a separate Kamatapur state they would be left with no option but to intensify their agitation and resort to violence.
