To help better understand autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), both general terms for a group of complex disorders of brain development the Centre for Child and Adolescent Well Being (CCAW) is geared up for several awareness raising actions.
An 'Autism Carnival: Celebrate Autism' which enters its third edition this year aims to inculcate new perspectives, which are far removed from medical jargon or formal medical conferences and are more understandable to general public is scheduled for April 5.
Diverse educational activities such as special talent shows, art and craft, games, and much more together with stalls focused on special education, speech and language therapies along with occupational therapy will be on demonstration or display to highlight significant developments.
"We aim to inculcate new perspectives, which are far removed from medical jargon or formal medical conferences and are more understandable to general public," says Shreya Tandon, an associate psychologist working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at CCAW.
The 'carnival' would also host various pediatricians, psychiatrists, psychologists, students and researchers in the field of Autism aiming to reach a new milestone in changing the way Autism is understood in this country.
Organisers say the event is set to open an expert panel for live discussion and for visitors.
The launch of the second series of 'Autism and Beyond', a unique parent information book is expected to be launched here. The artistic and creative side of children under ASD will be on display through mesmerizing paintings and artworks made by them, say organisers.
The daylong event also has fancy dress competition and talent shows for the special kids have been. Invitations have been rolled out to schools in the Delhi and NCR area and around 150 students are expected to be a part of the occasion.
Noted names in the fashion industry, Shantanu and Nikhil are scheduled to join in for inauguration and prize distribution ceremony of a special talent show for kids under ASD.
"The purpose of autism Carnival is to spread awareness in the society. As a mental health professional, it is one of our prime responsibilities to educate people about ASD. The event will create a strong community for Autism Spectrum Disorder, which will act as a support for the ones undergoing treatment for ASD," says Indu Chaswal, an Autism Expert (CCAW).
