The move assumes significance, as municipal polls are due next year, and the Bihar-UP migrant community is seen as a major voting population in the city.
"I extend my wishes to people on the occasion of Chhath. The ghats are 'kuchha', so, we have cleared the budget and also ordered for making the 'kachha' Chhath ghats into 'pucca' ones, which will be completed by next year," he told reporters.
The four-day festival, observed mainly by people from Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh or Poorvanchalis, began yesterday. On the last two days, people throng the ghats to make offering to the rising and the setting sun.
