Akola Municipal Corporation (AMC) has sealed mobile towers of as many as 10 mobile operators for illegally using them, a senior official said here today.
City dwellers have been facing problem since Thursday due to the action taken by AMC against mobile operators for not renewing their licenses.
Out of the 115 mobile towers in Akola, 70 towers have have been recognised by the AMC, while 25 towers were operating illegal and cases of 18 towers are pending.
Mobile companies have to renew their licences as per the new regulation issued by the state government. Companies were issued notices but they ignored it and that why the action has been taken in the last two days, assistant town planner AMC, Sandeep Gawande said.
Towers of mobile operators Airtel, Docomo, Uninor, Vodafone India were sealed.
Surprisingly, it was found that as many as 11 mobile companies were using only one tower to providing services.
Anticipating action of the civic body that they would disconnect the power supply, the companies used generators and kept the services in tacts and even locked the tower and fled away, Gawande said, adding, AMC had to call fire fighters and reached at top of the towers to seal them.
