Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) today passed an order to demolish the headquarters of Trinamool Congress (TMC) here, a day after it was inaugurated, saying the structure was illegally constructed.
"This building was constructed on a children's park, which is illegal and against the rule of the AMC. We served notices several times during the construction but the leaders did not pay heed to our notices. We have decided to demolish the construction," city Mayor Prafulla Jit Sinha said.
The notices were served to TMC leader Ashish Saha and others, and were asked to explain why the illegal construction would not be demolished, Sinha said.
But, Saha informed us they had only renovated an old building, which was damaged due to earthquake, the Mayor said.
"It is not right, no building was damaged in the city due to tremors," he told reporters.
Trinamool vice president Mukul Roy, who yesterday inaugurated the new headquarters, before leaving for Kolkata today said the building was not constructed illegally and all valid documents were there.
"CPI(M) is now seeing the spectre of Trinamool Congress as it will wrest power in the 2018 elections. They are afraid, so they served notices for demolishing the building," he said.
To a question, Roy said the Tripura unit of TMC would now concentrate on building strong organisational base of the party across the state and at this point it was not thinking about any tie-up with like-minded parties in the state.
