Host Ryan Seacrest made the announcement on his talk show "Live! with Kelly & Ryan", reported People magazine.
The ABC reality singing contest is returning after a gap of almost a year, after it was decided that the 15th installment will be its farewell season.
The revival series will have Katy Perry, Luke Bryan and Lionel Richie on the judging panel, who took to Twitter to share the news.
Perry wrote, "Mark your calenders America. Let's find an IDOL. American Idol will premiere Sunday, March 11 on ABC."
