The election for the Speaker's post, which had fallen vacant after resignation of BJP legislator Rajendra Arlekar following his induction in the Laxmikant Parsekar Cabinet, was held after the Question Hour in the ongoing Assembly session.
Pro-tem Speaker Mauvin Godinho, who allowed the division of votes, declared Shet as the winner after 28 legislators voted in his favour, while opposition candidate Lourenco got only nine votes.
