Making a suo motu statement in the Assembly, Chief Minister Jayalalithaa said that a 100 sq ft space would be constructed in select anganwadis, where furniture, toys and other necessary accessories would be purchased and kept.
In the first phase, 5,565 such centres would be developed at a cost of Rs 55.65 crore benefitting over 4.5 lakh children, she said, adding, the decision was to enable children to grow up in a motivating environment.
Jayalalithaa said the government would upgrade some of the anganwadis into child care centres to help working women to leave their children.
In the first phase, 211 anganwadis would be upgraded at a cost of Rs 2.31 crore, she said, adding, breakfast, snacks and evening tiffin would be provided.
