The upcoming animated film is based on the young adult novel of the same name by Deborah Ellis, published in 2000, reported The Wrap.
"The Breadwinner" follows a young girl, Parvana, who lives with her family in Kabul during the Taliban era. After her father is arrested, Parvana has to disguise herself as a boy in order to provide for her family.
"Millions of young girls like Parvana are growing up today under oppression or conflict, and helping their families to survive in those conditions. This story is a reminder of the immense value of their contribution," Jolie said.
Ellis has written the screen story and Anita Doron has penned the script. Irish animator, Nora Twomey, is set to direct.
The film will be available in English and in Dari, the Afghan language. "The Breadwinner" is expected for release in 2017.
