Indian Army has received a total of 178 complaints regarding violation of human rights since 2010 and maximum number of 131 such cases were reported from North-Eastern states, the Lok Sabha was informed today.
As many as 27 such cases were registered in Jammu and Kashmir since 2010, Defence Minister A K Antony said in a written reply.
On steps taken to strengthen the Human Rights Cell of the force, Antony said, "In order to strengthen Human Rights Division, the Human Rights set up has been expanded down till Corps level".
In reply to a question on construction of National War Memorial, Minister of State for Defence Jitendra Singh said the government has constituted a Group of Ministers headed by the Defence Minister to decide on its appropriate location.
"The GoM has given its recommendations, laying down the broad framework for construction of War Memorial while suggesting its location at 'C' Hexagon, India Gate," Singh said.
The Ministry of Urban Development processed these recommendations for approval of Competent Authority, taking into account concerns expressed by some government agencies over issues relating to traffic, security, availability of public space for the visitors and historical and architectural value of the site, he added.
