Inspired by five elements of cosmic creation, an artist has portrayed the journey from chaos to inner silence in her solo exhibition here.
Titled "Where Silence is a Poem", the exhibition by Sangeeta Gupta explores different elements of nature in vibrant hues of yellow, blue and red while capturing the meditative spaces where everything is silent and still.
"Being a spiritually inclined person I have been influenced by five elements of nature- earth, water, fire, wind and aether. I blend all these elements together on canvas because the core of our lives lies there. With these elements the life is in harmony.
"Our world is full of chaos. With this exhibition, I attempt to give people a zone of silence where they can feel the calmness inside rather than seeking it outside. It is more of a meditative process," she says.
For Gupta, the art which comes from within and not pre-planned is actual 'abstract'.
"Anything that comes out of mind will remain subjective and that comes out of silence and meditation will be abstract. If it is not-pre thought, pre-planned but spontaneous then it surprises even the artist," she says.
Paintings title "Gentle Gesture", "Flowing Line" and "Swirling" attempt to identify the space at every nook and corner of the landscape.
"Even the colours I choose are part of the nature. I have used lots of yellow in my paintings, it reflects the harvest time and the joy it brings for people as well as mother earth," the artist says.
In one of the painting from the series "Where silence is a poem", the artist depicts the cosmic dance of Lord Shiva when he opens his third eye.
"Lord Shiva has been an inspiration for creating a new world. So when he opens his third eye he not only destroys but creates a new world.
"In the painting, it starts from the ground as you reach the top of the tree. It is full of life and light. For me, it's a journey from darkness to light," Gupta says.
The artist, who is also a filmmaker and has authored nine books of poetry, does not like depending completely on paint and brush while painting.
"I don't like depending completely on the paint brush. I have been influenced by the weavers and artisans of India who really can weave and create such beautiful things.
"We are losing these elements, I hope we are able to revive these cultures and I try to keep these memories alive in my works," she says.
Gupta sees her current exhibition as a reflection of the artistic journey she started 30-years ago. For her, painting has been a way to liberate herself.
"Art is not therapy for me, it is a way to liberate myself," Gupta says.
The exhibition underway at Art Knosult here is set to continue till December 15.
