The foundation stone for a High Court building in Arunachal Pradesh was laid by Chief Minister Pema Khandu at Naharlagun, near here, yesterday.

Calling it as a "historic day" for the state, Khandu expressed hope that the justice delivery system would be smoothened and fastracked with the coming up of the building.

"This is a dream that came true after 18 years since the permanent bench of the Gauhati High Court in Itanagar was inaugurated here exactly on this day in 2000," he said.

The chief minister said the new building would be built entirely from the states own resources without depending on the Centre.

He set a target of two years for its completion.

"For development to pick up pace, the state needs to have efficient justice delivery system and law and order in place," the chief minister said.

The chief minister thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Minister for Law and Justice Ravi Shankar Prasad for their support.

Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court Ajit Singh, Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein, state Assembly Deputy Speaker Tumke Bagra and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.

The chief minister lauded the service of Chief Justice of Gauhati High Court for his advisory role in strengthening the justice delivery mechanism in Arunachal Pradesh with the creation of new courts and manpower in the last two years.
