Assam flood condition improving

The flood situation in Assam showed signs of improvement today with the number of people reeling under water declining and the death toll remaining at three.
Till yesterday, more than 77,000 people were affected in 286 villages in 10 districts across the state.
Nearly 50,000 people are still reeling under water in over 200 villages across the state today.
Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) said in its daily flood report that more than 48,000 people are affected as of now in 207 villages including Barpeta, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, Tinsukia, Dibrugarh, Goalpara, Kamrup Metropolitan, Morigaon, Sivasagar, Nagaon and Dhubri districts.
Highest number of people are hit in Barpeta district with over 23,000 persons still suffering due to the flood, followed by Goalpara with more than 14,000 people being affected at present, ASDMA said.
Authorities are running three relief camps in Tinsukia and six in Goalpara, where a total of 1,495 persons are taking shelter at this moment, it added.
Over 5,700 hectares of crop areas are under water currently, the report mentioned.
The death toll in the first wave of flood in Assam remained at three -- one each in Bongaigaon, Lakhimpur and Baksa districts.
At present, the Brahmaputra is flowing above the danger mark at Nematighat in Jorhat, while its tributary Jia Bharali at NT crossing in Sonitpur, ASDMA said.
