Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today said the state government has decided to introduce Right to Health Services to offer free health care to poor people.
"Providing affordable, accessible, accountable and quality health care services to all sections of the people has been a long cherished commitment and the government is working persistently to achieve this," he said inaugurating a 200- bedded district hospital at Sonapur.
"The Right to Health Services, which the government is contemplating to bring in, will ensure basic health care to everybody," he said.
The spectrum of health services would be gradually scaled up to cover all sections of people in the state. The government has already instructed the health and family welfare department to ensure better treatment and better medicines to reduce maternal mortality rate, infant mortality rate and improve the overall health scenario of the state, he said.
Reiterating his commitment to carry on social security schemes despite the Centre's fund cut, Gogoi said Assam government would further provide financial incentives through several vocations to one lakh people of the state as their right to employment.
