The water level in river Brahmaputra and its tributaries in Assam is rising as heavy rains continue to lash the state for past seven days.
Water resource department officials today said the water lever of Brahmaputra's tributaries Bhogdoi, Jhansi, Kakodunga and Dhansiri in Jorhat district was above the danger level, while a sluice gate at O'guri on Puthi river and a ring bundh at Jhansi Mukh were washed away, affecting 6,000 people in 35 villages.
The situation has worsened since last night and the department has pressed its officials and staff to take measures to fight the situation.
Three persons swept off by swift current of Bhagdoi and Jhaji rivers were rescued by State Disaster Management Force(SDMF) in Jorhat town, the officials said.
Rain water flowing over Na-Ali road in Jorhat has submerged several areas in the Lichubari area, including Danish Nagar, Manik Nagar, Lichubari Colony and Club Road.
Vehicular traffic on the road has been suspended due to water logging.
The district administration has formed a flood relief cell and distributed 50 quintals of rice, 10 quintals dal and two quintals of salt in the marooned villages under Teok revenue circle.
Over 30 temporary relief camps and shelter for animals have been erected along PWD roads and highlands in the areas adjacent to the marooned villages, the officials said.
In Guwahati, heavy rains have submerged several areas and arterial roads in many localities and rain waters have entered homes, they added.
