An associate professor in the department of economics at the Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar University (BBAU) here today alleged he was "beaten up" by one of his students.

The student, a PhD scholar, has been detained, a police official said.

Assistant Professor L C Mallaiah while speaking to PTI alleged that at around 3.25 pm one of the PhD scholars hurled abuses and then beat him up.

"The reason of the PhD student's anger was that an external examiner had asked him to revise the thesis for his PhD and resubmit it. He wanted to avoid the revision and resubmission process. This happened last month, when I was on leave during the summer vacations. About four months back, he had tried to beat me up, but I ignored it thinking that any drastic step by me can prove to be detrimental for him and may spoil his career," Mallaiah claimed.

"The PhD scholar has been detained. Based on the application given by the professor, an FIR will be registered in this regard. There was a dispute and individual fight between the student and the professor over some issue," SP (Lucknow North) Anurag Vats said.

Violence on campus has come under the spotlight after the Lucknow University was closed till further orders as over a dozen teachers including the proctor were attacked inside the campus by outsiders.

The Lucknow University will now reopen tomorrow.
