An automated teller machine (ATM),
situated on the premises of Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College here, caught fire and but no one was injured, police said today.
The incident took place last evening when the fire suddenly started in the ATM of State Bank of India at GSVM Medical College, police spokesperson said, adding it was brought under control after two fire tenders were rushed to the spot.
No one was present at the ATM when the fire broke, probably due to short circuit, he said.
The ATM machine was gutted in the fire and officials suspect that cash inside the machine might also got burnt in the incident.
Bank officials, who reached the spot after the fire was doused, were yet to ascertain the exact amount of cash that burnt in the incident as they were unable to open the cash window of the incinerated ATM.
Senior bank officials, who also reached the spot, could not open the window as the buttons were completely burnt.
The officials said that generally an ATM has around Rs 20 lakh in cash, but how much money was in the machine and how much got burnt could only be established after experts arrive here from Delhi.
The security guard on duty at the ATM said the fire was caused due to a short circuit, police said, adding that the case is being further probed by fire officials and the police as well.
