Hendrik Helmer, from Darwin, had to endure a painful hospital visit after the large cockroach entered his ear and his efforts to suck the insect out with a vacuum cleaner failed.
Helmer has bagged the unofficial title of having the largest cockroach removed from a human ear in Darwin, the 'ABC News' reported.
The 2cm cockroach took about 10 minutes to die after it was dislodged from Helmer's ear at Royal Darwin Hospital.
Helmer's ordeal began early Wednesday morning when he was woken up by a sharp pain in his right ear.
As his pain became excruciating, Helmer's flatmate rushed him to a hospital.
A doctor at the hospital put oil down his ear canal, which forced the insect to crawl in deeper but eventually died.
The doctor then inserted forceps into his ear and pulled out the cockroach.
