Australia has joined the International Solar Alliance, saying it will support the government's commitment to clean energy cooperation and help meet the Paris Agreement emission targets, its Minister for Foreign Affairs said today.
Led by India and France, the ISA will "deepen cooperation on solar research, reduce technology costs and harmonise international standards", Australia's Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop said in a statement which was released to the media by the Australian High Commission here today.
"The ISA aims to promote the roll-out of solar technology and solar energy uptake amongst countries that lie in the sun-rich belt between the tropics," it said.
Australia's expertise in solar technologies and research will be shared globally with the formal creation of the International Solar Alliance.
"Joining the alliance also supports the Australian government's commitment to clean energy cooperation and meeting our Paris Agreement emissions targets," it added.
The statement was jointly released by Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop and Minister for Environment and Energy Josh Frydenberg.
