Tata Motors fell by 2.92 per cent, Mahindra & Mahindra was down 1.92 per cent and Bajaj Auto slipped 1.21 per cent on BSE.
Shares of Hero MotoCorp dipped by 0.88 per cent and Maruti Suzuki was down 0.34 per cent.
Subsequently, the BSE auto index fell by 1.71 per cent to end at 17,822.20.
Meanwhile, in the broader market, the benchmark BSE Sensex ended 207.89 points down at 25,044.43.
"The near 2 per cent fall in auto stocks after the National Green Tribunal's directive added more legs to the fall which has been on since the start of this month," said Anand James, Co Head Technical Research Desk, Geojit BNP Paribas Financial Services Ltd.
