BJP today said the bail awarded to YSR Congress leader Jaganmohan Reddy in a disproportionate assets case had exposed the government's "double standards" and its misuse of probe agency CBI.
BJP said that the bail to Jaganmohan raised several questions as he was kept in custody for 16 months with 10 charge sheets having been filed against him in a staggered manner over an protracted period.
Now, CBI had softened its stand against Jaganmohan and said it has not found enough material against him in seven of those cases, thus facilitating his bail, BJP spokesperson Nirmala Sitharaman alleged here.
She alleged that the government had adopted double standards and was misusing CBI.
Some cabinet ministers in the Andhra Pradesh government were also named as accused along with Reddy, but none of them, with the exception of M Venkat Ramana, had been arrested, she said.
"The double standard is clear also in the way in which CBI is instructed to handle cases related to Gujarat. The obsessive pursuit and harassment to please political masters stands out. Why does CBI not handle the Andhra Pradesh ministers similarly, both on disproportionate asset or on encounters?" Sitharaman said.
The party also mentioned the disproportionate assets case against Samajwadi Party Chief Mulayam Singh Yadav and said he had now been "completely let-off" after the case took, "several twists and turns - depending on the urge of the Congress party - either to harass him or to ease the pressure on him when favours were required from SP".
Asked if BJP was supporting Jaganmohan, Sitharaman said that is not the issue but alleged that Congress was definitely playing some game with the YSR Congress leader and it was clear that both were "walking hand in hand".
